The South African Revenue Service (SARS) has officially kicked off the 2025 Filing Season — here’s exactly what accountants and taxpayers need to know to stay ahead, save time, and avoid penalties.

Important Dates

  • Auto Assessments Rollout: 7 – 20 July 2025

  • Manual Filing Opens (Non-Provisional): 21 July – 20 October 2025

  • Provisional Taxpayers: 21 July 2025 – 19 January 2026

  • Trusts: 20 September 2025 – 19 January 2026.

What SARS Will Do

  1. Send Auto Assessment Notifications
If your client is selected for auto assessment, they’ll get an SMS or email from SARS between 7 and 20 July.

  2. Pre-Populate Returns
Using third-party data (from employers, pension funds, banks, medical aids, etc.), SARS will pre-fill tax returns for qualifying taxpayers.

  3. Process Refunds Automatically
If the assessment shows a refund is due and details are correct, SARS will pay it directly to the taxpayer’s bank account within 72 hours.

  4. Demand Payment Where Due
If SARS determines that money is owed, the taxpayer will need to settle it via eFiling, the SARS MobiApp, or EFT.

What Taxpayers Must Do

If You’re Auto-Assessed:

  • Check the SMS/Email Notification

  • Log into eFiling or the SARS MobiApp

  • Review the Return for Accuracy – Look at income sources, deductions, medical aid, retirement, etc.

  • If satisfied: No action needed

  • If not: Amend the return and submit by 20 October 2025

If You’re Not Auto-Assessed:

  • Start Filing from 21 July

  • Gather Documents – IRP5, medical aid, RA certificates, etc.

  • Ensure Banking & Security Details Are Up to Date

  • File by 20 October (non-provisional) or 19 January (provisional)

Tips for Tax Practitioners

  1. Update your clients’ contact information. SMS/email notifications only work if details are current.

  2. Prepare early, encourage clients to send documents before 21 July.

  3. Use SARS help channels, including digital tools, how-to videos, online guides, and extended support hours.

  4. Avoid walk-ins, SARS strongly discourages branch visits. Use eFiling or the MobiApp to book an appointment only if unavoidable.

Bottom Line

Filing Season 2025 is built around speed, digital efficiency, and automated assessments. The earlier you check, prep, and file, the better for your clients—and your practice. Help your clients stay tax-smart, compliant, and penalty-free.
